Xero AI reporting

Ask questions about your Xero data in plain English. Answers come from the reports your finance team already signs off, the invoices and bills behind them, and your chart of accounts. Every figure links to the Xero report or invoice it came from, and Synaptic Intelligence only reads.

What you can ask about your Xero data

Xero's own reports come first. A profit figure is taken from the profit and loss your accountant signs off, rather than rebuilt from invoice lines.

Xero beside your other systems

Our wage bill went up last quarter. Did headcount go up with it?
  1. Finance reads the wages and salaries lines from Xero's profit and loss, for both quarters.
  2. HR counts employees at each quarter end from your HR system, such as BambooHR. Employee is HR's word, so HR's count is the one used.
  3. The answer sets the two side by side. Where they tell different stories, for example a leaver still paid a final month or a contractor paid through payroll, it shows both figures, says which it used and why, and remembers how the two line up for next time.

That question consults two departments and reconciles their answers, so it costs four credits. A question only Finance needs costs one.

How you connect Xero

An admin clicks Connect with Xero, signs in to Xero and approves read-only access. If the login covers several organisations, you choose which one to read. The connection has to answer a real request before Finance uses it.

Every permission asked for is one of Xero's read-only ones, and nothing Synaptic Intelligence sends to Xero can change a record. You can revoke access from Xero at any time.

For IT and security: the exact permissions

OAuth 2.0 with Xero's granular read scopes, and nothing broader: offline_access accounting.reports.profitandloss.read accounting.reports.balancesheet.read accounting.reports.trialbalance.read accounting.reports.aged.read accounting.reports.banksummary.read accounting.reports.executivesummary.read accounting.invoices.read accounting.contacts.read accounting.settings.read

offline_access keeps the connection working between sign-ins. The reports that can be run are a fixed list: profit and loss, balance sheet, trial balance, aged receivables and payables by contact, bank summary and executive summary. Every request names the organisation you chose, so a figure is never read from another one the same login can see.

Which department it feeds

Xero feeds your Finance department: the ledger, cash, what customers owe and what you owe suppliers. Finance owns the word revenue, so when another system reports a different revenue figure, the answer says whose is the real one.

Each person sees Finance's answers only if their job title allows it.

Plans

Each system you connect counts once. Starter and the free trial include three connected systems, Growth five, and Team, Business and Enterprise as many as you need. Reading answers is free for everyone; asking uses credits. See pricing.

Other systems

Thinking of connecting ChatGPT or Claude to Xero yourself? Build or buy: what it involves. And for why two systems can both be right about one figure, why HR says 41 and payroll says 43.
